Carioca here. It is fucking dangerous. And dirty.

The major problem is that it is so fucking dangerous that people learned to just deal with it. The violence is normalised. So lots of people will tell you that is not that big of a problem. People here think it is normal to always be on the look out for something, not wearing watches or cell phones in public. Some people even has the "theft money" , a small amount that is easily stealable while the bulk is hidden carefully away. Lots of people think this are common sense stuff and don't really think about it.

Yes, on one hand I want to get away from here. But I have family here, it is hard to leave them.

I've never been to New York, but that sounds a like like what New Yorkers used to do to cope with that city's crime back in the day.

Nice anedocte, happened this Sunday. Coming back to my bf house after we had dinner. Walking from the subway station to his apartment, in what is considered a nice upper middle class neighborhood. There is some loud noises, appears to be from some blocks away. I just look at him and without needing to say anything, he nods and says "yeah, sounds like gunshots."

And what did we do? Just continued walking, perhaps a little faster, but nothing more. You need to detach yourself from the absurdity of the situation to be able to live here.
