He was quoted saying "I can't believe it is butter".

Did it still spread? I think that is the most important question that needs answering now.

No one is sure exactly why the butter was buried in bogs — some think it was sometimes an offering to the gods — but evidence strongly suggests it was a method of preservation.

No one is sure exactly why the butter was buried in bogs — some think it was sometimes an offering to the gods — but evidence strongly suggests it was a method of preservation.

"Oh dear Gods, please accept this large chunk of butter. Should last you a while."

"Steve, we went over this, it's meant to preserve the butter, not as an offering to the gods."

"But what if the gods get hungry, Patrick?*

Steve gets whacked over the head with the butter.

"Oh dear Gods, please accept this offering of an idiot."

Patrick throws Steve in the bog, followed by the butter.

Well, that seems like a lot. This was before sliced bread, though, so you had to butter the whole loaf.

...an EU butter mountain precursor :-) (look it up if you are not familiar with the idea); the Irish were just ahead of the time. Anyway, you can go ahead and eat it, you'll be just fine; if you live in Europe, you probably have already eaten butter nearly as old as that (thanks to said EU policy) :-)
