I refuse to use those stupid things ever. Heck, if a place even has those at all, it makes me want to shop there less.

Me too. They should give me a discount, 1%, or something to save them the money of an employee plus benefits.

Same here. I am disappointed when traveling and some local supermarkets chain doesn't have them yet or if they are temporarily down. I am the self checkout ninja!!! People look so impressed when they see me. REALLY! They do! :-P

You, and people like you, are the reason why customer service won't go fully automated. Not that it's bad, but it's natural. I imagine even at these restaurants they will have one person at counter and 2 machines that you can order at too.

It might eventually, if they can get their interfaces sensible and less prone to really annoying error. Last time I tried using one of those things, it had me repeat one step three times, and then errored out, requiring human intervention. Overall, just waiting in a line for a real cashier to do real cashier stuff would have taken an equal amount of time and been possibly a little less annoying.
Also, maybe I'm turning into a bit of a luddite; but I kind of doubt it.
