It depends on the school. It's a trend at only a small handful of ultra-liberal institutions, and is in no way widespread. It's spreading though, like a slow cancer.
edit: I live in the south and have a loose network of friends throughout southern academia. They assure me that a request for "trigger warnings" would be met with a smirk at best and being embarrassed in front of the class at worst. I suppose there might be women's studies programs here or there in which it might be an actual thing, but I haven't heard of it.
