Unknown children have historically been "it". "They" has a long history of generic use, while we're at it.

I know and normally advocate for singular they, but they is for cases where the person is unknown or unspecified. Once you give a name to the subject, 'they' must decompose into 'he' or 'she'. Since we're taking about someone with a known name, they is irrelevant.
