Eh, there's plenty of scientific evidence that some people are not mentally ill who go through transition. The problem is that it has become part of pop culture as opposed to just being a medical procedure. For instance, I knew a girl who was originally born with male genitals, but not quite, they were ambiguous and the doctors and her parents made the decision to (and this is a common decision in this circumstance because of pragmatism) build a hole instead of a pole. She eventually transitioned into a man later in life, and she never appeared happy as a girl, but as a guy he seemed very unremarkably male. Granted, this is a rare case and nowhere near as common as the problem appears to be today. Pop-culture ruins society again, I guess.

Upvoat for common sense. Transgender people do exist in this world but nature nearly always gives a clear signs when this is the case, they are called hermaphrodites. Thinking you have a fe/male brain when all other parts of your anatomy clearly point to a specific gender is foolish and treating a mental disorder with surgery is abhorrent. I think we'll look back in 50 years and place most (not all) gender reassignment in the same category as using lobotomy as a psychiatric treatment.
