I've always wished they would change yellow lights to blink faster the closer to red it gets. I don't like how some yellows are shorter then others.

I'm completely on board with you!

In fact, have new LED traffic lights indicate somehow the amount of either green, red, or yellow left on the cycle so you can adjust your driving accordingly!

My insurance company hates hard stops, but if the light changes at the wrong time there's not much I can do about it!

I just don't think we can do anything that lets people anticipate light changes.

If you add a feature as you described, you let people anticipate the red. The bottom line is that people will run more red lights and exhibit worse judgment. That's just how people work.

The other one I keep hearing is something that lets you anticipate the green. People will enter intersections sooner than before and with less caution because the timer told them it was OK. That will not mix well with additional red light running.

As it is, only people smart enough to fully understand an intersection, and familiar enough with an individual one to know its patterns, gain the benefit of anticipation. If we give the stupids the same information, they'll be running into each other. People need to fear the intersection in order to respect it.

Some really good ideas in this thread.

That's really cool looking, unforts it wouldn't work on a mass scale since the lights are omnidirectional and would end up confusing drivers.

It wouldn't need to be omnidirectional though. All they'd have to do is use a metal pole with recesses containing the lights, such that it would only be seen from the appropriate direction.

True. The recesses would add to the strength of the pole too.

I think if all lights were like this, we would get use to it (it is not hard to tell which post belongs to what direction IRL). The harder part would be to convince people with budget.

Maybe. Maybe. Don't get me wrong, I love the way it looks, but I'm more of a turnaround roundabout advocate.

We need these in the states asap.

It would be helpful when you are stopped behind a truck that is blocking the direct view of the light.

or the sun in your eyes or both.

We need better off ramp signage, drivers who understand that multi-tasking is retarded, people who don't stop on highways to watch a guy change a flat tire, people who are considerate when lane changing much much more!

The recommended absolute minimum yellow light is 3 seconds. https://www.google.com/#q=yellow+traffic+light+timing+standards

I like it. I always thought it would be cool if there were directional radio signals or infrared on roads that could come through your car speakers for things like traffic lights. Also it would be cool if roads had speed limit radios that let your car know the speed limit.

GPS maps can often help with that.

My iGO GPS was able to tell me the limits.

Yeah, that's true. How updated/reliable was it? Could you just tap a button or say a command to find out the limit?

Waste of electricity and light pollution. Just make new led stoplights.
