The lyrics of this song actually do tell a story about music and the music industry. Saying goodbye to Buddy Holly is the easy part to catch in this, but the Beatles make an appearance, among others.

Doesn't matter what you or anyone else says. Art is subjective, and this song tells a story; not only does it to me, but to millions of others that interpret it the same way. Whatever the artist's intent was, obviously isn't what was perceived.

Like the old saw of an artist that paints something abstract. Gets super excited to be featured in the MOMA. Goes to the exhibit. Gets super bummed because the painting was hung "upside down".
