What, the raking of the strings? Practice it for two weeks and you'll have it down.

I actually heard a good cover live by a hipster band called the aunts and the uncles using a stand up bass. It was insane.

It's an old English - or maybe French - ballad about a whorehouse

Origin

"Like many classic folk ballads, "The House of the Rising Sun" is of uncertain authorship. Musicologists say that it is based on the tradition of broadside ballads, and thematically it has some resemblance to the 16th-century ballad The Unfortunate Rake.[4 ] According to Alan Lomax, "Rising Sun" was used as the name of a bawdy house in two traditional English songs, and it was also a name for English pub"

Tthe original lyrics begin:

There is a house in New Orleans, it's called the Rising Sun

It's been the ruin of many a poor girl

Great God, and I for one

"Lomax proposed that the location of the house was then relocated from England to New Orleans by white southern performers.[5] However, Vance Randolph proposed an alternative French origin, the "rising sun" referring to the decorative use of the sunburst insignia dating to the time of Louis XIV, which was brought to North America by French immigrants.[8]"

Nothing to do with occultism and evil. Just simple failure and degradation.

What? They're singing about a drunk with a gambling problem.

Why can't it be about both? Drinking and gambling arguably lead to evil. As for occult there is symbolism and it's more esoteric, the House (astrology) of the Rising Sun (more astrology - your rising sign, rising son - Christ rising from the dead). Astrology is considered an occult practice. Just some observations off the top of my head without looking at the lyrics. If you spend some time studying and understanding symbols and occultism, esoteric meaning, these things start to pop out all over the place. If you don't notice these connections right away you're part of the masses who are not meant to understand esoteric symbolism. The internet has made available resource for common man to understand these concepts, whereas in the past this information was only available to elite families that practice these sorts of things. Yet the concepts are such a different paradigm most people don't understand the basics to start doing more research. Cheers!

I think that organ was used to play the theme & all the background music from The Brady Bunch.

Eric Burdon is one of the most under appreciated and underrated musicians of the last 50 years.
