I'm a newb, so thanks, TIL there are different formats! Please excuse my ignorance, but are formats mostly used for tournaments? When I play with friends, we just go by the basic rules I guess.

The different formats are mainly used for competitive play, yes. Nothing stops you from adhering to their special rules and banlists if you ever want to participate to an official event, though.

I play Cube (Now that I've finally finished it, lol) and Legacy in a casual anything goes environment. I also play limited formats at some prereleases.

I know this is old but instead of creating a new thread about it.

I mainly play commander with a bit of standard and draft. Working on building up a collection again after having taken a good few years out of the game and not collecting for ages.

I've been familiar with/played magic here and there for the past decade thanks to an older sibling who's been into since about when it started. Haven't had money for my own collection until recently though, so I don't have many cards, and nothing I own isn't standard yet.
So, standard it is for me, for now. I favorite way to play is drafting, though.

I've been playing for nearly a year so I stick to formats that are easy like Modern or Standard. Right now I'm trying to figure out what deck I want to play.
