From his interviews since entering adulthood, you can tell he's a pretty awkward guy, and very resentful for the life and identity he gained from starring in The Phantom Menace. In a way, I do feel a bit sorry for him. He was 10 when that movie came out, and from then on, he would be forever known as "the annoying kid from the biggest letdown in movie history". This means his classmates, teachers, neighbours, and random people on the streets saw him as that. Maybe if the movie wasn't a terrible disappointment, and Anakin was more likeable, his identity would have been seen more positively, but it was doomed from the start.

It figuratively kills me that he got so much shit for playing young Anakin. I thought he did a great job, especially in comparison to the other actors in the movie.

Star Wars stigma didn't just happen to him - for a long time after Natalie Portman couldn't get a job because directors became convinced she couldn't act. This was largely due to the extremely bad writing and directing of George Lucas who had convinced himself that he could do no wrong.
If you look at Jake Lloyd's filmography, after Star Wars he did a number of Star Wars-related videogame voiceover gigs, a movie you've probably never heard of, and then his career pretty much goes full stop. It's a good bet that Star Wars destroyed his career.

Don't blame the actors, blame George Lucas for writing some of the most wooden dialogue in a major motion picture and being far too entitled and big-headed to actually listen to feedback from his own crew.
Say what you want about TFA, but it bloody well benefits from having a creator who doesn't have Protection from Editors.

I really don't understand why people didn't like the movie. Maybe it was because young me didn't really care for elegant dialogue.
