I think the problem isn't a shortage of borderline insane writers but a shortage of risk taking patrons.

( Much easier to predict how much money you'll make with a sequel of a sequel of a tired and over-used trope )

Exactly this. There's a fine line between brilliance and idiocy when it comes to storytelling and it's hard for most to tell the difference until the finished product is in front of them.
