Okay, you were warned.
So let me start by saying that I think the whole movie takes place in Ophelia's head in the moments before she dies. It's all a dream. Reality mixes with fantasy as she hallucinates in her final moments while the last few days of her life flash before her eyes. This is shown to us in the opening of the film where she lays dying. It's our first strong piece of evidence about what's really happening.
Since she is hallucinating the events of the film, she is an unreliable narrator. Even things which are supposed to have taken place in reality, separate or partially intertwined from the fantasy fairy tale world, may not have actually happened as we see them, or may not have happened at all. What we do know is that she is still very childish, doesn't understand the grown up world, and she is very much into fairy tales. She's also been surrounded by war and her life is affected by it right up until the moment she is shot and killed.
So what really happened? Hard to say. All we know is what Ophelia thinks happened as she lays dying, half alive, and half into a hallucinatory dream world of near death, her traumatized brain still trying to make coherent sense of all the horrible death and suffering she has seen, and she does this through the lens of a child obsessed with fairy tales, trying to cope with all of it, including her own death. She constructs a narrative that separates her from these traumatic events by placing herself elsewhere off on her quests while they are happening. It's also a narrative that allows her to die with a contented smile, believing that she is now an immortal princess, while her brother is rescued from the evil villain who is served justice by receiving deadly violence at the hands of those he inflicted it on.
Or maybe I'm wrong. What do you think really happened?
