Yup I'm not even excited for this. It takes a lot to get me going crazy for something. The last 5 years of my life have been totally and completely fuckity so much other stuff I have on my mind that makes it really hard to let things get my juices flowing. I'm a fan I love the movies but after the last set I'm so Meg about it.

I was jaded by the prequels. I just couldn't bring myself to believe that they would/could actually redeem the franchise. I was right, but not in a "Haha told ya so! Vindicated!" way. It's pretty much an expected disappointment.

I didn't see anything but 2 movie posters in Hong Kong. Ive seen way more in Japan, but it's not in your face.. I haven't seen what it's like in America so I really don't know.

I should add that for big movies, they usually pay people to dub them in Cantonese, but there was no effort for Star Wars. It's like the DGAF about Asian markets.

Every other post on plebbit is star wars advertising.

They even got one on our front page. Disgusting.

Technically this post is also advertising

Thats 2 SW posts and a Star Trek movie post on the front page now.

If its Disney it's simply a marketing ploy for toys, but I have some hope as they've done alright with Marvel.

Yeah, couldn't possibly be that some people are just genuinely excited for a new release in a franchise they grew up liking, or anything like that...

I've seen the originals so many times, it's insane and I'm sure many others have done the same. But I just feel like all JJ Abrams can do is copy/paste things rather than really make something original. I'm sure some people are fine with more of the same, but not me. That's why I'm not excited.

I mean wow, a sphere robot rather than a cylinder!

Wow a black man instead of Luke!

Wow a commoner female instead of princess Leia! (Not too sure which is which here, but I know that one is a luke clone and one is a leia clone)

Wow more stormtroopers!

It just feels so formulaic. I mean ANH is literally as cliche as it gets, but it was a classic and simple. But we've already seen that. We don't need another cliche hero's journey. We've already seen the darker Empires and the fun ROTJ. They could've gone more into untold stores, but nope. Gotta get that appeal to everyone and their mothers so they reverted back to a simple feel good rip-off of ANH.

I haven't seen it but I bet a million dollars that somebody that either Finn/Rey grows to admire gets killed off and that creates their passion to do whatever the final battle will be in the end. Bonus points if fucking Kylo almost kills Rey but almost gets killed off by a different character like Finn and we see him alive later.

That can't possible be the plot. If it is, it a whole new level of, fuck it, in writing I've ever seen.

Another similarity is Alex Guinness was the biggest star in the original, and also got killed off and budgeted to a cameo role to save money for the special effects in the sequels.

That's really the plot?

You know... as I recall, the original Star Wars was based off of Hero of a Thousand Faces.

If they did something with this next one, if they made it play out similar to ANW with the intent of making a commentary about the circularity of our stories and myths and how the same story keeps showing up time and again, that would be really interesting.

I'm sure we won't get anything like that, though. This is mass-marketed crap, distilled down to what will put the most butts in seats. It'll be just more formulaic tripe, with no real substance or soul, to throw on the pile.

So... same as Leia then?

Shes there to first be captured and then later rescued.

[–] LusciousFox 0 points 3 points (+3|-0) ago

He gets damseled 3 times and has to be saved by Rei within the first 30 mins. Pretty much the whole movie with maybe 1 exception Rei saves herself but he has to be rescued.

apparently the 'black guy' is the C3P0. 'White girl' is the luke, and part time old man is Obi Wan. But it's ANH.

I'll probably go see it eventually, but I'm not in any rush.

Disney?

JJ Abrams?

And this is supposed to get me excited?

Fucking mediocre.

The worst part for me is that in a decade it will feel as dated to the 2010s as the original Battlestar Galactica felt dated to the 1970s. Mark my words, JJ Abrams movies will feel twenty years from now as if the teenage angst from 2010 wrote those movies themselves.

They will be forgotten.

Abrams is a great visual director when it comes to large scale sfx. Super 8 was loads of fun as were the new Star Treks. The problem is plot. He's really bad at plot. Thankfully Star Wars plot on film was always kind of weak but made better in the EU.

Didn't they wipe away most of the extended universe?

Whoa there, just saw episode 7.......... I longed to see Jar Jar and craved the old ways of George Lucas.

Funny, I never truly appreciated Lucus's artistic vision until tonight. He should have stuck to his guns.

Dune might be the only science fiction property that I would get excited for these days, and yet, it would be reluctant AND I would hope for an Netflix series over a feature film

I don't think anyone will touch Dune for a while mainly because of the current political climate. I read the series (a long time ago so the details are a bit fuzzy) as basically an allegory of the Wests involvement in the Middle East. An occupation force subdues an indigenous population in order to secure a vital resource that runs the entire galactic empire. A nobleman is betrayed and goes native leading the population on an interstellar jihad that murders billions before finally seizing control of the Empire and sets about reshaping it to suit the ways and customs of his adopted culture.

I think the majority still want to see it. The online majority here not so much but the gen pop of the world very much so.

We're the paranoid lot waiting for Mark Hamil to show up on screen drinking a Pepsi in his Under Armor robes with his Sony Lightsaber.

Edit: I'd buy the shit out of a Sony Lightsaber if it were a real thing.
