I agree with your sentiment if not with your specific complaint. I thought it was a middling movie at best that was saved from being horrid by exceptional performances by Matt Damon and Chiwetel Ejiofor. I thought the plot was pretty mediocre, as it defused any possibility for dramatic tension within the first act by establishing that literally every single problem would be overcome without severe consequence. Every single twist, and this movie presented with every single one it could, was overcome within five minutes only to be replaced by a new one. There were very few clear character arcs, with most of the characters playing the same note throughout the movie with very little discernible growth, and probably what drew me out of the movie entirely, very little chance that they WEREN'T going to be able to get him home. I know it's a movie, and it's going to have a happy ending, but not once in the movie did I forget that fact, and that's where I think it failed.

I actually got a little rude on some of the disasters because they were so precisely right on schedule. If you've seen a few movies in your life you'll be able to predict this one's every move like clockwork. But yes, Matt Damon was good, even though he had a lot of schlocky lines to deal with, and Chiwetel Ejiofor has NEVER not impressed me. I loved him in Dirty Pretty Things and Four Brothers so much.
