Interested in any suggestions, though if you're interested in targetting me I've tried to outline my preferences below. You'll quickly realise that I do not have a memory for movie titles or actor names.
So I went a long time without watching movies or tv series'. I haven't had a tv tuned in for 6 years and rarely watch movies. I don't keep up with what has or is coming out and have no idea what I have missed for the last several years.
I currently need to increase my at-home exercise significantly and will be spending a lot of time on an exercise bike or rowing machine and want to line up some good things to watch while I do so.
I'm not a huge fan of super hero movies (x-men, superman spiderman, daredevil) but am a fan of other sci-fi themed movies.
One I liked but cannot recall the name of, would be the last movie I watched at a cinema, was about a guy whos uncle had managed to cross into another world and suspend his body in his nephews world while he lived in the other and eventually the nephew crosses to this world to meet/save his uncle (or something?) and ultimately takes his place in suspension to live in this alternate world.
If you can decipher a movie title out of that jargon you're a legend.
Some of my favourite movies of all time are Smoking Aces, Lock Stock & Two Smoking Barrels, Miami Vice, Layer Cake, Lucky Number Slevin - basically movies with several stories that twist together in some fashion. No idea if anything along those lines has come out in recent years.
I kind of want to see some Morgan Freeman movies, as the webs obsession with him came at a time that I was not watching movies. Any movies in particular that utilise his 'voice of God'?
I tend not to like horror movies, Saw series, Hostel etc but over-the-top stuff like (that movie about the 2 friends that buy a cabin in the woods and all the college students accidentally kill themselves) and Tarantino stuff I enjoy.
Don't limit yourself by that though, take me out of my comfort zone a bit.

Movies since 2010 that you need to see:
Inception - dreams within dreams within dreams...MUST SEE
How to Train Your Dragon - digital toon about a boy and his dragon
Shutter Island - the less you know about this mindfuck going in the better...just watch it.
The Book of Eli - Denzel in a post-apocalyptic wasteland...should be right up your alley, probably the worst movie on this list, but still good
Rise of the Planet of the Apes - origin story for Planet of the Apes, duh
Mission Impossible: Ghost Protocol - Tom Cruise dangling from the Burj Dubai
Skyfall - James Bond 007
Looper - time travelling assassins
Gravity - an astronaut is stranded in orbit after the shuttle and iss are destroyed
Captain Phillips - Tom Hanks is captain of a freighter attacked by modern day pirates
The Wolf of Wall Street - biopic about the slimiest slimeball who ever slimed
Ender's Game - adaptation of the Orson Scott Card scifi book
Guardians of the Galaxy - the pinnacle of comic book movies...not to be missed
Dawn of the Planet of the Apes - sequel to Rise
Interstellar - I didn't like it, but people would freak if I left it out...should be right up your alley, but it should be right up mine too
Gone Girl - Ben Afleck is investigated for murder when his wife disappears
Edge of Tomorrow - also sold as Live. Die. Repeat. Should have been a massive scifi movie, but marketing fucked it. Watch it.
Morgan Freeman movies: Transcendence (scifi movie about AI and nanotech...ghost in the machine type stuff...good, but everything above is better), Last Vegas (comedy aimed at old shits like me, i liked it), Oblivion (small role in Tom Cruise scifi set in post alien invasion wasteland...it's ok), Lego Movie (never seen it...people who give a shit about legos seemed to like it)
You can't go wrong with any of these. Just make sure Inception and Guardians are the 1st 2 you watch.

I forgot about Dark Knight Rises. It has Morgan Freeman, but it's the weakest of the Batman movies.

That's a long list! Exactly what I was after. Thanks for putting the time into the list with the short descriptions.

City of God, one movie I haven't seen recommended yet. Definitely a modern classic.

Here are a number of post-2009 movies I would recommend, in no particular order:
I watch a lot more older movies (from the 60s - 90s -- and especially from the 70s and 80s) than I do new, just because I prefer the look and feel of older movies, but I thoroughly enjoyed the ones I listed. I'm sure there are more that I'm missing. And that list doesn't include any documentaries, which I love. I wasn't sure if you were into documentaries. If so, I could probably name a few more.

All of those look fantastic. Thank for putting in the time to link all the IMDB's, very kind of you. Those sci-fi ones you listed sound really good!
I'm so-so on documentaries. Documentaries about really out there things I'll likely watch, not so much a David Attenborough fan.

Magnolia - Happiness - Requiem for a Dream - The Royal Tennanbaums - Blow

There's another 5 I would never have known about nor found if I went looking myself! I'll have a look at them all :)

Oh man those are some great movies, also Archie's Final Project is a very good movie not many people know about. Enjoy! :)

The Departed and The Grand Buddapest Hotel are probably right up your ally.. lots of people stories coming together. Also, Crash... but I've never seen that one. I hear it's good though.
I assume you've already seen Snatch right? It's part of the Lock Stock & Two Smoking Barrels films.
Some of my other favorites
Army of Darkness - Over the top horror, silly, kind of funny. Dude ends up in medieval times and has to find the Necronomicon.
Children of Men -- Nobody can get pregnant, people are dying and nobody is being born.
The Adventures of TinTin -- Animated but it's awesome. It's a Spielberg film so you know it's cool
Speed Racer -- Based on the cartoon, I think they did a great job bringing it to life. I'd say definitly check it out... people seem to either love it or hate it. It's a really cool looking film... family friendly and all.
Some oldies:
Braveheart, Mars Attacks, The Warriors, They Live, The Thing,

The Grand Budapest Hotel is one of the few I have seen, but only because my brother showed it to me. It was absolutely fantastic. Though I haven't seen the rest of the movies you've listed. They made a Tin Tin movie? Holy shit this better be good.
Edit: Yeah I've seen Snatch - a classic.

TinTin is great.
It's got that classic 80s Adventure/Mystery feel to it... but because it's Computer Animated the people, the environment, and the camera can do a lot of really cool things that would otherwise be impossible to film or just really, really expensive.
There's a scene where a dam breaks and 3 different groups of people are racing and fighting over one tiny piece of paper... also while running away from a bunch of water. It's so cool...

That would be Tucker & Dale Vs Evil. If you enjoyed that, you might enjoy Cabin in the Woods.

I think I've heard about Cabin in the Woods, I'll check it out!

Since everyone else is avoiding super hero movies, with the exception of the batman movies and guardians of the galaxy which you totally should see, I will take some time to recommend the only other good superhero movies/series you should watch that you might like despite not liking the typical superhero movies.
Captain America 2: Winter Soldier - really solid movie more of a spy movie than your typical hero flick.
Daredevil series on Netflix: Absolutely fantastic. Whatever your opinion on the Ben Affleck movie just imagine the exact opposite. Good if you like crime and martial arts movies.

Despicable Me
Despicable Me 2
The Avengers
Harry Potter Deathly Hallows: Part 1 & 2 (if you've seen the previous HP movies, otherwise Guardians of the Galaxy and Dinner for Shmucks)
