The thing I hated about this scene is that it is completely contrary to history. The flyers in WW1 were treated like royalty by both sides. Most of them were upperclass young men, and many had attended the same universities at various times. It was like a giant club for the privileged. There is no way a German flyer would stab an English soldier who just saved his life. It's absurd and disgusting.
Everything you said is exactly how I understand WWI history with respect to pilots. I went so livid over that part I stopped watching the movie to bitch about it here.
