I respectfully disagree. The Babadook gets a lot of acclaim and was hyped up by a lot of people when it came out but I don't really understand why. I feel like it started off pretty well and ended up completely mediocre. I think a lot of the praise for this movie comes from people who are not traditionally fans of horror movies, as it is the only way I can justify why this movie gets so much praise. This isn't a slight on anyone's opinion per se, just another guys take on it.

That being said check out House of the Devil and It Follows for some delectable horror treats that came out in the past few years.

Was it just me, @TheLetter10 and @blazerjacket, or was the little kid constantly smiling/laughing at really inappropriate times all the way through the movie??

God, this all day... I actually appreciated the creativity and originality of their "monster", but the little kid completely ruined the film for me. I was too annoyed to be frightened.

Totally agree. After reading all of the hype, I went in expecting to be blown away. What I got was a mediocre (not bad, but not great) movie with an extremely annoying little kid. I truly don't understand how it got so popular.

I really liked "House of the Devil" I haven't watched "It Follows" yet. I actually avoided "The Babadook" for a long time on Netflix because the description just didn't interest me. I kept stumbling upon comments on how good it is and the final straw was a post I saw here on VOAT recently. I figured if it sucks I can just stop the movie and pick something else. As it turned out I was ignoring what happened to be a very good movie (in my opinion) for too long.

Hey man, I hear you on that situation. To my everlasting shame I didn't see Drive until two years after it came out because I thought it looked incredibly stupid. Boy was I wrong! Lol. Definitely check out It Follows, man, the blu-ray is on sale for like eleven bucks at Best Buy right now

Yeah I was gonna say this. I enjoyed the movie. I thought it was really well done....but after it finished I felt like there were just so many loose threads that it just didn't hold together all that well.

For all that it's still a pretty good movie I think.

In a post a read last week here on VOAT someone recommended "The Babadook." It is streaming on Netflix so I decided to give it a chance. I was not disappointed. This was the first modern horror flick since "Paranormal" that I watched all the way through and really enjoyed watching it. For me it's a movie that if you watch it by yourself with the lights off you will sleep with the covers over your head, that if you can sleep.

Sounds like you're not much of a horror fan then

I actually JUST heard about this movie, like a week ago. Haven't seen it yet, but it scared the piss out of my sister, who is in her thirties and doesn't really get shaken by anything. That alone was enough to pique my interest, plus the trailer was dope.

I thought it was a pretty good psychological thriller and enjoyed the suspense, although the ending was a bit odd.

I enjoyed it and I appreciate that the ending did something a little different and left something open to interpretation.

But I think I like the idea of the movie more than its execution. Some parts were pretty uninteresting, and there were choices that the film made seemed like a bit of a cop-out. Echoing others, I don't think this is a great example of a good horror movie for horror buffs.

Perhaps it's best to approach this film as a psychological thriller rather than a horror, I personally loved the eery feel that permeated the entire running time, it treated its subject matter with intelligence and care, I love the idea of your grief and sorrow manifesting into something demonic and dark, something a lot of people in similar situations harbour in themselves.

I like the nods to early horror films, particular that of German expressionism. I'm very much looking forward to Jennifer Kent's next work

I cant figure out why this movie gets so much praise. Weak story, bad acting, and a terrible ending. Im a big horror movie fan but this was just aweful.
