It's not about being smarter or seeing things. I think the message that resonated with people was that it was a movie about going your own way, accepting the painful losses, fighting to win for worthwhile things not materialistic consumerism from corporate culture. Wrapped up in a dark theme of destroying stuff and a weird "dark" chick Marla Singer. Perfect way to sum up the attitude of the 90s and plant a reactionary seed for the future.
