I bought a K1200RS brand new back in 2000. Right now I’ve got just about 60,000 miles on it. I still really enjoy that bike. Been all around the western states with it and use it as a daily commuter all the time.
When the K1300S came out, I didn’t buy one for a few reasons. One was that my K1200RS is doing just fine with lots of power. Another reason is that it seems the K1300S has an over abundance of new technology (looking at you, new ABS system) and there have been rumors things aren’t holding together as well as they should. Another reason is the looks. BMW made the new bike pretty angular and from some perspectives it looks a little like an older Honda Hurricane - I tend to like things a little smoother.
I almost picked up a S1000RR, but that bike seems to be made for tiny people. I stand 6’2” with a 34” inseam. I don’t want to modify the bike to fit me.
Then along came that sweet 1600cc motor. ...And BMW made a bagger. Ugh. Really? Ya ya there’s the huge, K1600GT, and that’s all well and good. But it’s HUGE and not exactly a nimble, lane-splitting machine.
So why not a K1600S? Blow the doors off the competition. Lighten that flywheel a little, raise the compression a little, build some real performance in to the engine and then stuff it in to a frame about the size of the K1300S. Give it a top speed of 200mph. And style it nice - take a cue from the Italians. Then charge $25,000 or so for it. I’ll buy that in a flat second.
