“On January 18th, 1871, in the Hall of Mirrors in Versailles, Prussia proclaimed the German Empire. Although never an official holiday in the old empire or anywhere else, today, score of DNVP and AfD supporters, amongst others, march in streets around the nation to celebrate the ‘Tag der Deutschen Einheit’ (Day of German Unity).
“It would appear this is becoming a growing trend, and the German far right might as well make this a regular holiday.
Much like the celebration of the Sedantag late last year, it is a coming together for many of the German right.
“Backed by the DNVP and protected by their paramilitant Stahlhelms, many Germans today celebration the foundation of their nation and Prussia/German military supremacy over France. They wave flags of the German Empire and federal republic alike, depending on party affiliation. But overall, their message is the same: ‘We are Germans. We are strong. We are proud.’
“The last celebration they had, during the Sedantag, over a million supporters showed up. How many will show up this time, for this rapidly growing unofficial holiday?”
tl;dr German holiday for the far right. It’s becoming super popular. How many people show up for it this year?
