I'm far more disgusted with whoever was in charge at UCL and the Royal Society than with the mob.

I think that is fair. Ignoring the mob no longer seems to be something many institutions consider a viable option, and that is too bad. There is more than enough disgust to go around here.

Power is perception - every time this happens, every time thy get their way their expectation and entitlement will only grow... as will their thirst for fresh transgressors to punish. Just think what message this is sending to every university and professional body. What message is this sending to every scientist who ISN'T a venerable Nobel laureate.
If we win it will be through open discussion and (mainly) humour/mockery. We are not winning.
They win through internalised self-censorship. Whatever happens to Tim Hunt everyone is terrified to make any comment which might in some way offend the mob, even if it's completely innocent. Which means that they are winning - by changing society in their image without anyone actually consenting to the change.
