That globe is clearly an actual globe and not created by their prop people. At least I hope because otherwise that would be a little dishonest for the prop person to pitch that they need to make an actual globe.
So then the question is who printed this. Who would be in the business of printing actual globes that weren't accurate.
It could be a way to not use someone else's map and to make it clear that you aren't. Maps are subject to IP and putting other people's imagery in movies may have more consequences than I would otherwise realize.
But the fact of people remembering such a thing is odd. Possibly they need to think something is there because that area I think is where you can get the furthest from any land mass. At least the pacific has islands in chains. In the idian ocean there is madigascar. A larger but still quite small Island closer to it inhabited (small by pacific standard), then two very very small islands to very north west of Austrailia, practically sand bars. That is it for the whole thing.
