It's possible, but I'd consider it strange that they would make it contain a fictitious landmass exactly where a submerged continent once was. Also strange that many people recall there being a landmass in this area that they can no longer spot on a globe.

Um, no. Zealandia, of which New Zealand is a part of, is on the southeast of Australia. The supposed mystery landmass you refer to and is shown by both these images is off the western coast of Australia. Not exactly what I would all exactly.
