Some more articles about this:

https://www.wired.com/2015/04/dmca-ownership-john-deere/

http://www.mnn.com/your-home/organic-farming-gardening/blogs/tractor-scheme-farmers-fight-right-fix-their-own-john-deeres

What it essentially boils down to is this: John Deere (and a few others are following) are using digital copyright laws to (successfully) make the case that people who bought their products don't truly own them. They instead have an "implied license for the life of the vehicle to operate the vehicle" that is to say, they own the metal bits, but not any of the closed source software driving it. Therefore, since John Deere still owns the software, and therefore the hardware it runs on, farmers are forbidden to repair their own tractors, because that would require tampering with software, which is John Deere property.

This sort of shit pisses me off!

Yet another reason to trust mechanical things over computerized when you have an option. And not to trust companies who do this kind of thing (Apple is following close behind, but you shouldn't be buying their shit anyway)

Speaking as a non-America, it's downright shitty no matter what country you're in.
