Of all my gardening tools, my sickle is probably my favourite, and the one I use the most. We have a lot of quite green, softish plants and a sickle can clear them better than anything else I've found.
It cuts with less effort than a machete, covers a larger area than clippers, and doesn't require petrol and setup.
But do you think you can buy them? No. No you can't. Here, there is not a single place I've found which sells new sickles, the only places are second hand places, markets and the like. All you can buy for clearing light scrub are power tools which require far more effort and space than a sickle, and they're far more expensive!
It just bugs me that such a useful and versatile tool is no longer made because someone decided that power tools are better in all case. Don't get me wrong, power tools have their place, chainsaws for example are fantastic! I just don't think every tool needs a motor. Sometimes a sharp, curved lump of steel is fine.
So next time you see an old, English made (most seem to come from Sheffield) sickle being sold off cheap, pick it up. They will only become harder to find.
