When i made the switch to Linux, i wanted to keep my operating systems on separate hard drives. Since i wasn't able to put in another internal hard drive, i just went and installed Mint x64 on my Samsung Story station USB 2.0 external drive.
I was also so afraid that i could accidenatlly destroy something on my windows installation that i did the installation from another computer.
Everything works really well and is wonderful. Except resuming from hibernation.
The process is as follows:
After the system has been hibernating, i turn on my computer. then i have to go into bios and wait a little until my usb drive has finished spinning up.
Then i leave Bios and select my usb drive from the boot menu.
i select the default option from GRUB and, judging by the activity light on the drive, Linux begins reading the hibernation image back into ram. This goes on for a minute, and after that sometimes resuming works fine.
But most of the time then all USB devices go dark. The computer keeps running, but doesn't do anything and doesn't respond to input on any device.
I don't even know where to start looking to do the troubleshooting.

Looks like some bug in a subsystem. Try a newer kernel, unfortunately I can't help you with that from heart on Mint.

Which is the newest kernel available for mint.

And pretty much the latest kernel anyway. You're out of luck, it will likely be fixed somewhere in the future but there is no telling when.
