Holy shit, yes for BfW! I love that game, and it's available pretty much on any platform. I have it on my Linux computers, my phone, my Windows laptop, anything.
Now, the inportant question. Favourite race/faction?

I usually go for undead. When in the Ageless Era, I choose destroyers or the like.

This, and Angband.

Wait, since when is Nethack open source?

I just recently got into this. Now I know why Nethack is legendary: it's really fun. Just goes to show that it's not the graphics that make the game.

CS:S is fun. It doesn't have the levelling bullshit that CS:GO has, and there are a ton of community servers.

Oolite "an open-world space opera". It's like a modern clone of Elite. Also, it's got a ton of mods and addons.

I wish games like this allowed you to fly down to the planet's surface. That's really the only thing stopping me from playing it. I want to be able to see things at 1 meter scale.

You probably want to check out Pioneer, an open-source clone of Frontier.
[–] normal_dude ago
Very dated but Frontier: Elite 2 has planet exploration and is free.

0 A.D. Basically FOSS Age of Empires
OpenMW Open source Morrowind (you still need the original game data though, but technically the engine is open source so it counts)
Arx Libertatis Arx Fatalis remade for Linux

Battle for Wesnoth Turn-based tactical strategy.
Cataclysm: Dark Days Ahead Complex post-apocalyptic survival roguelike.
Hedgewars Nicely done Worms clone.
Brogue Original take on roguelike genre.

WESNOTH!
I have played this game for... hmm, 8 years now? That sounds about right. Still can't pass some campaigns on Nightmare. Ugh.

My sentimental favorite is xtank, although that was decades ago, and I haven't tried to see if the Linux version works.
