So this happened a few years ago. The house was laid out with a large open living room and kitchen, with a front door and then a door by the kitchen that opened into the back yard with a dog door. I had a very large Rottweiler who was very old, and would use it from time to time.
From the living room there was a long hallway (picture an L shape) with 2 bedrooms down the hall, a bathroom, a closet at the end of the L, and then a master bedroom with a bathroom at the small end of the L. (this is important to story, I promise )
This being winter in Philly, I had the outer flap to the dog door closed, and I happened to be home from school sick. In the early afternoon I decided to take a shower in the master bedroom.
I took a nice long hot shower, and was in the shower breathing in the steam and rubbing baby oil on my skin (girl stuff). I heard a clicking noise. My dog was diabetic and sometimes had trouble holding his pee, so I thought the clicking sound was him pacing in the hallway. I called out to him to hang on, quickly wrapped a towel around myself, and stepped out of the bathroom.
I look down the hall expecting to see my dog and instead there was a man going through my roommates room, her room being right at the other end of the L. The clicking sound, I realized later, was him trying to get the safety off of my other roommates shotgun.
We stared at each other for what felt like forever and then he said "sorry"and ran out the door, throwing himself back through the dog door and jumping over the wall where he ran away.
It's kind of funny now, because nothing happened, but it fucked with me for awhile. Just the shock of seeing a strange man in your house. I don't know what his intentions were. He had to have realized I was home at some point , even if he didn't hear the water running he would have heard me calling to the dog. Obviously he wasn't some hardened criminal, yet, but imagine if it had been someone with truly bad intent. I totally froze, until he ran, and I chased him, lol. I don't know what I would have done if he'd charged me.
The cops said thered been a few other breakins in the area when people were home, who knows. Never caught the guy that I know of. My dog slept through the whole thing. He was very old and very sick though, I had to make the hard choice to end his suffering a few weeks later, so I don't blame him. In the day, he was an awesome guard dog. I actually have another story (i was way younger ) where he did defendme.
Anyway, that's my story and kind of what I'd like this sub to be.
