I'd go a step further, all bans should be public with a reason attached.

It wouldn't take much longer, 98 percent you could just add a check box when you ban them if they're spammers, or posting illegal links, but if they're a regular or have a standing in the community, there should be a line or two about why they were banned.

Actually, there is a good reason for shadowbans to exist. Shadowbans were invented to block spambots. It's easy for someone writing a bot to have it automatically create new accounts when it gets banned. Hence the idea to ban bots without telling them. It was never intended to be used on human users. And thus began reddit's turn to the dystopian.

Isn't the cat out of the bag at this point though? I'm not a coder, but it seems like it wouldn't much more work to program a bot that could check its own posts periodically, either from another browser or by logging out, to see if it is in fact shadowbanned. Or, if somebody is capable of creating a bot that automatically creates a new account upon being banned, wouldn't they be just as capable of creating an entire bot that does nothing but check the accounts of their other, posting bots?

You could have a minimum 'lurking period' instead. That should keep the bots away?

So do a delayed activation on the ban. Or make it trigger on their next post.

yeah but there is a need to block people spamming.. but then again they should be banned outright.

I think reddit liked shadowbans because it allowed them to inflate their traffic and user numbers.

I always thought shadowbans were used mostly because they're not immediately obvious to the people banned, so that it takes them some time to create a new account.

That's what I mean, there's two good reasons for moderation, spam and illegal content. If 4chan gets mad at 8chan and there's a subverse on here for 8chan, and 4chan decides to spam it with CP, you want the mods to be able to shut down that content fast so people can't point at voat saying "they hosted CP for hours!" if admins aren't around to quickly review the content.

For spam, that's shadowbans on reddit, and that's only done by admins, so it'd be the same here, just put a quick note about being a spammer when they're banned.

Agreed that bans should be public. A page where you can see who's been banned by who and for what reason (8chan has this system) would go a long way in stopping mods from abusing their power.

There's no need to copy Reddit too closely, this is an opportunity to adopt the best systems developed in a range of places

That sucks, how horrible is that site that we keep hearing these stories over and over again from different users?

I'm really looking forward to the transparency the admins have planned on here, even the user profile is way more useful on this site than reddit.

Don't be a shitlord don't get shadowbanned. Simple as that.

Quite sure that's pretty much the consensus from what I've gathered from all the introductions and ideas sub.

yeah I understand the need for them to exist from a technical point of view, but there needs to be a more transparent system. They should at least be flared with "Banned:$Reason"

yeah but you can't have one without the others. It was originally used for that reason on reddit, but then suffered from scope creep.

Spammers won't generally appeal bans, so it's better to publicly ban them. Reddit used Shadowbans because shadow banned users still count as users. It was a way of flaunting their epeen to investors in the older days

Banning spammers good, banning users over hurt feelings bad.

Shadowbans are the most childish thing I have ever seen. Mods ban people, but don't even have the pants to tell them they were banned.

Well, when you put it like that!

Shadow Bans exist to destroy the truth in different subs. They are cowardly and a tool used to sway public opinion. Fuck that noise. Most people want an alternative from reddit for this exact reason
