Are you carrying a rifle in your hands in the line at McDonald's?

The pistol is with you 100% of the time. Much easier to carry than a rifle.

The Shit is going to Hit The Fan at a gas station with one guy pulling a gun on you. You better be ready to stay alive.

Eh. If I think I'm fast and smooth enough to draw on someone in that kind of situation, I'm only blowing smoke up my own ass.

The best defense against that kind of situation is to keep your eyes open and stay away from shitty parts of town.

I'm more concerned about interruptions to our oil supplies or something large scale, as we'd quickly run out of food in supermarkets and hungry people are pretty desperate.

Best defense is indeed stay away, but you won't be 100% effective. That movie theater in Aurora wasn't attacked because it was in a shitty part of town. Some crazy guy starts walking down aisles popping off rounds, I want to be equipped to fight my way out. Rifle would be best, but those are harder to bring into movie theaters than a handgun in my pocket.

All due respect....I'd really like you as my nearest neighbor at the start of an apocalyptic event. Your place would be stop #1

Yes. Even at home, a long gun is a bitch to lug around all the time; although, however, having one, in addition to a pistol is always added safety, since you might have time to get the long gun.
