The limit is there to prevent people from signing up just to brigade. If you contribute you reach the cap pretty fast

Thanks, I'd upvoat you but I can't :/

One of the problems with the limit imo is that content submissions don't count toward the cap. Some people comment a lot, some people submit content. Both are contributing.

Hahaha no problem on the upvoat, here's one for you to help you reach your cap.

I do agree that submitting is absolutely contributing too, but you get a "point" automatically just for submitting, and it would be really easy for someone to artificially reach the cap just by doing that.

The initial limits can be annoying but there are certain groups (I'm sure you can guess which), who just want to disrupt shit here so the few measures that are in place, while slightly annoying for genuine users, at least help prevent some of the shitposting and brigading

My first response to this post was to upvoat it because I wondered the same thing. I then realized i can't lol. This makes sense tho.

Is there a reason that my account is brand new but I am able to upvote but not downvote?

*Edit: I just realized that it is a cap and not a restriction altogether.

I wish it was easy to get the cap. I have been trying but to no avail. :(

It's actually really easy to get right now since everyone wants to give it to each other. There will probably be upvoat subverses for noobs. Similar to how there are steam achievement servers.

Unless you contribute controversial opinions such as "webms are better than gifs" then you're in the negatives.

I just looked at your history and I wouldn't say it's your opinion on gifs that's being downvoted

The idea is that the old guard will make up for that by upvoting comments that they are aware are acceptable, where a new person should be in a more of a watch and learn type of situation.

Upvotes have already went up a shitton since the two migrations.

I guess that does make sense in a way.

Better than the "hard" caps that most forums have in place, but encourages you to contribute more.

Thanks for the welcome :)

I've actually been here for six months but I've only just now started to dig in and make a home :D

I think it's a good idea, I also like that you can't downvoat people until you reach a certain amount of upvoats too.

I like that it is fairly trivial to get to 20CCP, but a bit more work to make it to 100CCP to be able to hand out the downvoats.

It eases all us newbies in prettty well.

@nbd The jump to 20 happens pretty quick. The leap to 100 felt like work. It happens fast though- faster now with all the new bodies.

Weird. So you're limited to 10 upvoats per 24 hour period until you've received 20 comment contribution points?

It doesn't seem to be doing that at the moment: http://i.imgur.com/qxinio3.png

31 upvotes given, member for 20 hours...

I get that the idea here is to turn lurkers into posters, but forcing someone to post usually just gets a minimum effort, not meaningful new content that drives users to the site. Voat has an opportunity to absolutely clean house, and acquire all the pissed off reddit users, but they can't seem to stop shooting themselves in the foot.

I lurked for a year on Reddit, to get the feel of the site. Afterwards, I become an active member of many subs, and I have a respectable amount of karma to show for it. If they had subjected me to the limits that Voat is trying to impose, I would've just went elsewhere. It's only because of a lack of options (done with Reddit, Empeopled is snobby) that I'm giving Voat a chance anyway. Other people may decide it's not worth it.

Have an upvoat! For some reason the system doesn't seem to be stopping me, I'm 32 upvoats in 20 hours now...
