What a weekend. The minute the servers went down, I knew that another exodus was coming.
On behalf of those who came before, let me be the first to welcome you to Voat. Right now it's looking like a refugee camp in here. Judging from the last mass exodus, it'll calm down and we won't see the servers crash again. I mean, unless Reddit does something really stupid and shitty, but what are the odds of that? Right?
Yeah, we're going to need a bigger Voat.
Anyways, I figured I would post some answers to questions we here around here often. If you have more, just post them and either I or another Voater will do our best to answer.
So what is Voat like? Is it just a Reddit clone? Voat is whatever the users wish it to be. There isn't ten years of history, and millions of users, so we have a chance to start over. Most of the land around you is unclaimed, so go build something on it. Voat is currently a free speech community. Downvotes are discouraged....in fact, you can't even downvote until you earned enough posts.
Is Voat just people bitching about Reddit? After an exodus, you'll see a week or two of posts about Reddit. Using the refugee camp metaphor, it's pretty natural that refugees will want to talk and share their experiences. Some still long for their homeland, others join the society at large.
I heard people on Voat hate fat people and like child porn. Not really a question, but a common misconception. "Fat People Hate" members made up a large wave of new users, so it's natural that they would set up shop. Here's the neat thing. They set their subverse so that their posts don't show up on the front page. They keep to themselves, and are good neighbors. You'll actually find more civil discussions around here. Can't say it's always going to be that way, but enjoy the opportunity to be exposed to people who believe different, and share ideas with them.
As for child porn...well, Voat did ban jailbait. Mostly because shills from Reddit, angry at Voat, were making dummy accounts, posting child porn, then reporting Voat to the authorities. It was a dirty trick, launched at the same time they launched a DDOS attack. Some people want to carry their crusade with them. Be aware, and fall for it.
What kind of things do people normally post about? Here's something interesting. Despite the reputation of Voaters being a cranky and angry lot, we normally have more news related posts hit the front page than Reddit ever did. /v/news isn't engaging in censorship. Interested in learning more about the TPP and other shady deals? You didn't see it on Reddit, but you see it here. We have politics from all sides of the issues, and it seems like Voaters are an inquisitive lot.
Oddly, we have few memes and cat pictures. Not quite sure why that is. Now, if you like memes and cat pictures, go ahead and post them. Nobody is going to stop you!
Anyways, enjoy your time on Voat. Introduce yourself. Build your own subverse! Create content! Like many of us, after using Voat for a while you may never have an urge to go back.
