I remember lusting for an MT-32 as a young teen. We had one at school, and one of my friends who was into making music had one. They sounded great and the price was more than reasonable compared to higher end MIDI synths, but I could never justify the expense. Especially since I would have only used it for gaming, and making crappy techno songs that never worked out quite the way I wanted them to.
If you are interested in emulating this sort of sound on modern windows, have a look at CoolSoft VirtualMIDISynth and search for a Roland MT-32 like sound font. I forgot where I got my font, but games sounds exactly like I remember them.

I never had the privilege of playing old DOS games with a Roland. I played all of my old games on just the internal speaker and would go to my friend's house where he had a SoundBlaster. (I remember being in awe of hearing the Doom chainsaw in the SB.) I do remember seeing them in tech magazines and computer shops.. back when a 20MB hard drive was over a hundred dollars.. I'm really surprised at how big a difference there is between SB and the Roland.
