Part of what makes this design useful is that it's lincoln logs in a way. Sure an earthquake/tsunami may knock down a temple, but it's very easy to repair/rebuild because it's made this way.
Not as often as you think. IRC it's like 3-400 years and at the moment the Japanese craftsmen that do this are very few. I remember hearing that no nails are used.
Repairs are normally massive reconstructions because you can't just replace randomly. But yes, they are easy to do and to get almost exactly the same that was replaced.
