This is really cool.

Just one question: How is this being funded? If Voat gets big, you'll probably get a lot of traffic, which means lots of servers, which means expensive, and it would suck to have all of the images on Voat be inaccessible due to lack of capacity.

I'm going to try non-intrusive ads first and see if it can survive that way. If not, I have a few ideas for extra features that I can set up a subscription model for. (Image hosting itself will always be free.)

Imgur grew a lot faster than this will, and seems to have done well financially, so I'm pretty confident.

Sounds like a good plan. Good luck with it!

Now that I think of it, where does imgur get its funding?

I, for one, am cool with non-intrusive ads.

Good work.

I'd suggest the file name is auto-generated rather than using what appears like a pk ID. I'd also highly recommend this auto-generated name contain a simple prefix that you can RegEx match on in the future. If you get big it will be very handy to be able to check any incoming url for a file id pattern anywhere in it.

Example Pattern:

(vw-[a-zA-Z0-9]{10})\.(?:gif|png|webm|jpg)

Example filename: vw-ZSpN7YW267.png

Thanks for sharing. Best of luck.

PK converted to base-36, yeah. I thought about generating something random, but this was easier and seemed to work, and I wanted to get something online fast. It's definitely something I'll look into before getting too big, though.

Aww. :( Yeah they're nicer right now.

But in my defense, pomf is apparently blocked in many places because of their torrent tracker, and they don't have the backlinks giving Voat a better ranking in search engines like Imgur does for reddit. Those two things were my main motivation.

Also this is literally day one. Gotta start somewhere.

I can testify to pomf being blocked. Alternatives are nice.

I just hate the shitty name and what it's associated with.

Seems to work :-)

HTTPS is going to cost a little but I think it should be encrypted. I don't actually care about the other planned features, the only one I need is uploading a file nad getting an URI for it.

SVG support would be the first feature on my wishlist after HTTPS.

I'd also ditch the footer, there is no need for it.

Edit: Don't remove the footer but put a notice where to send DMCA requests.

That and plaintext are the next two formats I plan to support. I just need to polish the basic functionality first, then start expanding.

Yeah, it might be overly cautious. Done.

I'm curious as to why you redacted that last bit. Isn't that an obvious next step?

How did you choose your tech? Why IIS? Which database are you using?

I now, geek questions, but this is what I want to know.

I actually tried both Ruby and Node last night, and they're both pretty cool, but I'm far more familiar with C#. Since I'm working alone, development speed is the most important thing, and that's just where I can get things done.

Which database are you using?

SQL Server, again because of familiarity. Also because Arvixe only supports that and MySQL, and the latter is annoying.

Using what you know is what I'd do, it would be another stack though.

Which filesystem do you use?

I never asked for this...

the problem isn't the image host itself

it's how you plan on handling takedown requests and lawsuits when they inevitably come :|

Thank you.

My one wish for an image host is that they keep the feature-set minimal. I just want a box to put pictures in and a box to view pictures in. No voting, comments, no social features. It could have a plain HTML landing page with no stylesheet and I would use it. Ads I’m ambivalent about; I can live with it as a necessary evil for a personally-funded project.
