Technically they can, via data URIs. I'm not sure what the maximum size of the custom CSS is allowed to be, though.

How feasible would this be in the case of fonts.googleapis.com? That might be the hardest thing to pull out of /v/gaming since the sub currently doesn't have a banner and wouldn't have to worry about image URLs.

Doesn't every subverse with custom banners and fonts pointing to somewhere else? Also, voat would have to host the images or forbid them.

I don't disagree, but this would cause some revolt. Concerned users can turn off custom CSS.

Head mod of /v/programming here. Just changed it to use a data URI for the header. Could maybe be improved in size by using some optimizer tool, still the logo fits in under 10KiB of space base64'd.

Yeah, I got it smaller via 1000 zopfli iterations using apngopt(which takes a very long time on large filesizes). You can also remove the whitespace in the data URI for it.
