The only thing that might harm is spammers will be able to post at least once on every subverse they visit with a new account, but it is such a minor issue that this seems like a good idea.

I agree, I am just trying to play Devil's Advocate by thinking about ways it could go wrong.

I can't think of anything really bad, so I just mentioned the "spammers would be able to post at least once on every subverse with a new account" thing.

But it really is possible for them to do that from other subverses.

We have a site-wide ban list for spammers, I believe. There's a box in subverse settings to not use it, but every sub uses it by default.

That is a more recent addition (starting around the time of the ban of Amalek's Dead-_ account), but yeah, that also helps to minimize one of the main criticisms for DerKatalog's idea.

The problem isn't the way Voat works, it is just a problem with shitty mods doing things they shouldn't... fire the mod.

I don't really see a need to preemptively ban spammers. It's more work than just reacting to spam as it hits a sub, and even in default subs the spam problem isn't unreasonable to deal with.

No Mod should have the authority to preemptively ban a genuine user == spam is the exception.

I made his ban list and never commented in his sub: https://voat.co/v/environment/modlog/bannedusers. I was going to comment on a post by @NeedleStack, https://voat.co/v/environment/comments/1082131, and learned I was banned when my comment didn't stick. [Edit to add: As seen elsewhere: I agree with NeedleStack's post-- please separate the cancermod @henrycorp from other users' contributions]

I'm not sure preemptively banning spam accounts is feasible either. I'm obviously not a spammer and yet, there I am on the ban list.

Spam is pretty obvious and we scrub and ban when we come across it, which is how it should stay.

All bans should be earned, not just attributed to something you say elsewhere.

Every time a group downvotes you they're censoring your opinion. This place is not "censorship free". More like "direct censorship is discouraged".

Ban lists for spam should be global and managed by admins, not mods.

The Admins are too busy making the site work and don't have time (yet) to babysit the spam. This is partily how our downvoting of crap and upvoting of better stuff floats it to the top.

I'm with you 100%. This shit is blatant Reddit-style censorship.

I'd be cool with this. It would mean that I would have to clean out the ban list on /v/dice, but sure.

They do it in reddit so I agree. People should only be able to mod a max of like 5 subs since we're on the topic. Fuck power mods.

I'm behind this, but I think it should be implemented in a way where deleted comments/posts still count. Otherwise a user could preemtively delete their own posts/comments to avoid a ban.

become a mod for a sub that has suffered spam attacks from an "amalek" and see if you still agree - in general though i probably agree with your concern, but i think there are valid exceptions
