Or it could require you to make a comment if you downvote so they have to give a reason why they downvoted.

I've made my case against this a few times before on why I think it's a bad idea. [1] [2] I suggest reading my arguments in the links so I wouldn't have to type the same points each time this comes up. :-) Anyway, to summarize my points:

  • Adding requirements for voating would discourage lurkers from voating in the first place, which I'd argue is the largest contributor of voats.
  • Adding this requirement would only contribute spam instead of filtering down troll posts.

It also wouldn't help against people downvoting and putting gibberish or similar into the 'reason why' box, making the feature somewhat useless.

Ya I can see why that might be a problem now.

There was a great discussion on this very topic here. To be frank, the topic is highly controversial with good points from each side. Whether or not we can find common ground is uncertain, but last time it was because our userbase was so small. Perhaps with the influx of many users, we can revive the discussion with more strong points than before?

IMO all upvotes can remain anonymous, and also downvotes of submissions. Just the comment downvotes should be public, I don't see how this negatively affects a small userbase.
But I also agree that removing downvotes is also a good idea

I still feel like adding public downvotes as well will help curb unnecessary downvotes.
