That's all. I know that is against the "downvoats are not disagrees", but since that is how it is used, we should treat downvoats as counting towards the popularity of a comment.
Downvoat brigades would give your comments visibility, not hide it. Hiding comments shouldn't be a thing anyways.
So if your comment doesn't contribute to the discussion, you get no voats, no visibility. If your comment is something a lot of people disagree with, it will still get visibility and can be discussed.
If all voats count towards the comments score, people will think twice if they voat or not.
This shouldn't apply to submission scoring and position on the front page though.

This will help controversial comments be more visible, including spam. How can we tweak it to separate spam from controversy?

Not voting on it will keep it on the bottom of the page. If you find spam as in advertising, unrelated gore videos or similar crap, you should report it and a mod should remove it. But don't vote on it.

Yes. I would like to see something like this as an option. Or a checkbox or setting to exclude downvotes in calculating which topics or comments to display on your front page.

or maybe an option, instead of demanding that everyone see it the way you like to see it?

The way we have it now sucks and I think a lot of people agree with that at least. I was putting up an idea for discussion, not demanding anything.
