That could easily be abused in any environment with many computers such as an office complex or university. What is needed is a system with no potential for abuse or manipulation by the users.

Which is completely impractical. Never mind what's wrong with the suggestion itself, the actual practical limitations of this idea should make it a no.

No such system could possibly exist. There will always be a way around it.

I moderate some subreddits, one of which I helped start from literally 0 subscribers three years ago. I really would not like the potential for a block of subscribers to a subreddit I helped build be able to remove me from the very thing I worked hard on creating.

Conversely, I understand that there are times when mods are abusive of power and there ought to be something done about it. I think the only realistic solution that is fair to everyone is to start an alternative subreddit and vote with your feet just like people are doing with Voat now.

I know. I do not believe that any automated system will ever be immune from possible abuse. I agree completely with the rest of your points. In fact, another user and I didn't like the way a subverse was being run, so we started our own. It now has more subscribers than the original sub did.
