I disagree.

Downvotes serve a necessary function as a peer editing and reviewing system. No one will disagree that this system is occasionally abused, but to abolish the downvoting system all together would be throwing the baby out with the bathwater.

Eh, we could come up with a different peer review system.

I'm not sure your experience with Reddit, but it's CONSTANTLY abused there. Downvotes on Reddit are a huge problem.

My experience with Reddit was rather extensive, to say the least. I agree, the system was abused by a marginal minority.

You know what else is occasionally abused? Alcohol. Just because a small percentage of people who drink occasionally abuse alcohol, does that mean that it should be made illegal across the board?

They say democracy is the worst form of government, except for all the others. Criticize to your hearts content, but the hypothetical flaws of this system must be compared to the hypothetical flaws of the alternative system - and without any downvotes, I foresee the 'report spam' feature overwhelming moderators. And reddit is not equivalent to voat, not just because of userbase, but our ccp system, which I believe has the potential to offset some of the system's hypothetical downsides.

Voat may not be Reddit right now, but if nothing is done different and it's just a knock-off, then it will succumb to the same issues.

Voat does do things different. The 100ccp requirement for downvotes is VASTLY different from reddit. It mitigates the lurkers and sets a requirement for someone to have contributed enough to be a part of voat's community.

Why not just do away with the whole voating system, in favor of something else?

I'm against removing downvotes from the current system but out of curiosity, what is your alternative?

I don't think I'd be opposed to this.

I really don't think much would be lost if downvoats didn't exist at all. Yeah - I like the theory that they can be used to encourage high quality content by discouraging low quality content, but the simple fact is that they're far too often, and only more often as the community grows, used just to attempt to stifle opinions that lazy and ineffectual users disagree with but won't (or can't) argue against. They're really just an "I disagree but can't be arsed to respond" button for people who aren't willing to face the fact of their own cognitive dissonance. That is, and they are, toxic.

For instance, I know for a fact that if I go on /v/politics and write something that criticizes a policy supported by blinkered partisans, no matter how well-written and well-argued the post is, it WILL be downvoated. Absolutely guaranteed. That was exactly what destroyed /r/politics - it got to the point at which it was literally impossible to effectively post anything that countered the unexamined dogma of the herd, because it would be immediately downvoted into oblivion.

If there was some way to sort those users out from the rest - to keep them from downvoating without keeping people from downvoating low effort garbage, trolling and spam, then that'd be great, but I just don't think there's any way to do that, or at least nothing other than what's already being done (the 100CCP requirement and the downvoat/upvoat ratio limits). And what that means is that the more popular subs WILL be turned into shallow swamps of circlejerkery, just like they were on that other site.

That other site

Kek, this isn't Reddit, you can say it. NO harm will befall you.

Also, I agree with your statement.

I just like saying that. It's sort of a shorthand for "that tawdry ghetto of a site that's beneath my notice."

I originally linked you to facebook, but the link was wonky. I edited my comment.

I was thinking about that too but even if it required feedback of some sort, you could still game it by just typing something in, like spam characters just to allow your downvoat through. So then, what about manually having to allow them. That would be WAY too much work for a staff team and provided we get MUCH bigger, a la Reddit, then it would be next to impossible.

I like the idea though, but in actual practice I don't see it holding up well.

If a DV required a comment I think people will be less inclined to DV at all because it's easy to click a down arrow than it is to leave a comment.
