how can we ping users that we don't regularly talk to without being on their whitelist? I'm all for making dial_indicator shut the fuck up but I see it limiting the functionality of the site.

Establish rapport with them in public or private.

The whitelist would be disabled initially/by default, so it's unlikely that many users would enable it without reason to (eg: being ping spammed previously by Dial or people like him).

I know this is currently a relatively small community but I have pinged people I don't know simply because of a comment chain they were involved in. If you don't know the person at all this would make it impossible to get their attention.

I see your point.

Possible workaround as part of implementation:

  • User account setting - boolean - "Display ping whitelist status" (Checkbox toggle. If enabled, user's profile publicly states whether or not they currently have ping whitelist enabled. True by default.)

This would allow you to check if the user has whitelist enabled. If they do, you could pm a link to the comment/submission you want them to see and ask if they're happy to whitelist you. If you were to then become a problem, they could simply take you off their whitelist and/or block you to prevent any further communication via pm.
