I personally think chats might be useful, especially for small subs, to get to know other members better, to have better back-and-forth discussions, to get people more involved in the sub, to give people a great sense of community, etc. It could also be more useful for activist subs to discuss more easily about the actions they want to take.
Perhaps this could be more of a long term goal if its not easy to implement or too early for the site. Of course there are negatives too like it being more chaotic at times, and so I would be interested in hearing what people generally want here, including the details of how they might want it implemented if they approve of it.
I am not sure if people are aware, but reddit also has an irc part to it, i.e. snoonet. So we could even do something like that, and keep it as an irc separate from the site.

I can't see a downside to having it and I think that chat boxes and "official" IRCs do allot to keep the more blog-ish conversations to a minimum and give folks a place to chat about more mundane things instead of cluttering up unrelated comment sections with it.
