That makes me wonder - what is the purpose of entering an email on the settings page?

Right now it appears to be nothing. But it's common practice in web apps to capture an email address for future marketing or announcements.

This is my third account before actually writing my password down.

I'm on my second. I believe I added my email address to my first account, so I'm hoping when the password reset feature comes around I can get it back.

yep, exactly what happened to me, my first account had my e-mail.

Same.

I think the fear there is that it puts some security into the hands of a third party. Many email providers are easy to social engineer, this way there is less likely a chance that someone has their account taken over.
But then again this is just me speculating.

I don't think it's intentional, just a feature that's not been implemented yet.
True that stealing email access is a common way to steal accounts but it's not the only one, there are also keyloggers and phishing.
SInce not using email alone won't protect you, it doesn't make sense to not using, considering that having a way to recover your password should be a must.
