Yeah, accountability is definitely needed. There is too much complacency and contempt towards the people they were moderating at reddit. Not to mention a few instances of corruption.

I'm not sure about how it works currently but the first requirement for this is to have a complete public record of the mod activity, otherwise you cannot even know what they are doing.

I'd like to see a voting system as well, however determining who's allowed to vote would be tricky. It can't just be anyone because then smaller ones would be susceptible to brigading. Say /v/askvoat got pissed off at /v/guildwars2 one day. Everyone on /v/askvoat could just join, call for a vote of no-confidence, kick the mod out and leave again. I'd want at least a minimum karma earned in that subverse requirement for voting, a "cooling off" period after calling a no-confidence before the actual vote, and the right to an appeal for the mod if he/she lost.

You can use sortition against brigading, but you would need a rather large pool of user to pick from, so it might not work if you consider only sub users.

One thing voat already has is a non-optional public mod log so we can see what's being filtered.

It's not in the sidebar yet but you can get there manually: just add /modlog/deleted or /modlog/deletedcomments to any subverse.

Be the change you want to see. Mods volunteer their free hours to run a community. Most users are low quality. If you want to see better content then start a sub or try to get on one that's already started.

Mod compensation would be worth discussing in a new discussion as well. Maybe voaters could give gifts or gift cards as appreciation every once in awhile to mods in the bigger subverses. I wouldn't mind sending Magic cards to /v/magictcg mods.

The ultimate question.

Are the mods gods... or cods?
