It's simple guys, upvote content.

Well, we need the new users to be doing that same thing.

Because before this happened we had a good mix going, we are just getting drowned out right now.

The mods of FPH did the right thing and prevented FPH posts from being showed on the front page. This was because voat's first wave made it FPH central.

I do hope once voat becomes established FPH will be allowed to rank where it deserves. I understand that many may disagree with this but all it will take is for those to upvoat content they find more relevant.

it should even out soon, but still we'll have more waves of incoming users and down times until the servers get big

Well, we need the new users to be doing that same thing.

The problem becomes only being able to upvote the 10x... and we get into a ciricle. I'm sure it will die down soon, but with a mass migration this has to be expected.

I like being a dick online, sometimes, but not everywhere, all the time. Maybe I'll create a subverse called /v/goheretobeadick and we can go there and be dicks to each other so it doesn't overflow into places where we shouldn't be dicks.

Then, if someone is being a dick, we can say "dude! Chill. If you want to be a dick, /v/goheretobeadick"

We can have our dick cake AND eat it too!

I really like that second link about being a dick. Hopefully it gets followed. There could be something added where you can be flagged as being a dick and if it happens a lot you are informed about it. Just a little message along the lines of "hey you are being a dick."

Maybe I'm missing the point of Voat, but what's wrong with being a Reddit clone? I really enjoyed Reddit and only left because it seems to be turning into a corporate propaganda platform.

If it's niche content discussion that you seek, isn't there a subverse for that?

[–] johnparish [S] 1 point 49 points (+50|-1) ago

I dont know. See, I liked Reddit to around 2011, but I never liked the shitposting. Shitposting in general should be frowned upon, I feel. Especially when it is everything on the front page.

We might be a "reddit clone" but that doesn't absolve us from trying to do better.

[–] mediocre003 1 point 16 points (+17|-1) ago

But what you considering shitposting, someone else may enjoy. While /r/funny may have devolved into the cesspool that it is today, there are many users who enjoy that content. And that is their right.

One of the greatest appeals of Reddit or Voat, IMHO, is the ability to filter out the subs that you don't want to see.

If you haven't been here than you don't know. It was quiet and mostly peaceful place.

The new influx is just not the style that was going on and is causing many of us to wonder how to get some of the crap to go away.

No insults intended, but it was so nice. Cruising around a new website. Knowing the regulars because there were so few of us.

Like our own local pub on the web.

Exactly. Basically overnight it went from a good place to discuss interesting topics to a wild orgy of memes and upvoat-whoring.

I like having more people here, but I wish the newbies would at least try and assimilate to the existing culture. It's not going to happen though, given how many came over at once and how much they outnumber the existing user-base.

I can certainly understand the appeal of that sort of environment and I believe that Voat can provide you with that experience in the form of subverses. The front page, however, should represent the most popular posts of the community as a whole.

Reddit has/had broad appeal which brought over the undesirables of the internet, but it also brought a huge creative following as well. Sometimes you get shitposts, sometimes you get brilliant works of art. So you subscribe to /r/EarthPorn and block /r/circlejerk.

For the things I like, there aren't too many users here for it, yet. I try to provide original content to that extent, but it doesn't interest others so I feel like I'm wasting my time posting it. I have a feeling other niche content providers feel the same way.

I can certainly relate. I work with Quickbooks all day and my free time is spent mostly consuming rather than creating. My opinions typically aren't popular, either, so I usually just lurk

I agree, with the whole drama that has been reddit the last few weeks all I was looking for something like what I knew. From what I've been learning about Voat that seems to be it, and I feel like it's a place I can actually start to contribute unlike reddit where I only consumed.

Actual content? Nah, that is too hard.

It is not even the reposts, it is the needless pandering.

Personally I think that's a major issue with the current system. I see the appeal of having to wait for 100 upvotes before being able to upvote and downvote more than 10 things, but that also creates a huge incentive for low effort circlejerk-y content as new users scramble to get reputation so that they can just go back to lurking.

EDIT: I'll add that this issue is probably far more prelevant now, since there's such a huge influx of new users (such as myself) coming in.

[–] okjersey 0 points 7 points (+7|-0) ago

Agreed. Been here a day. Have submitted a couple things on /v/askvoat, but I'm not willing to pander for my upvoats. They'll come eventually. The ability the downvoat isn't worth spamming everyone else.

[–] bubblesort 0 points 9 points (+9|-0) ago

I agree. The rules regarding minimum vote counts to do things encourages shitposting. At the same time, it does stop people from throwing votes around carelessly, which is good.

No matter how the rules work, though, when you have a massive migration you will always have more shitposting. That's just how the internet works.

I think it's mostly just growing pains right now. Probably 90% or more of users just started in the past month and probably 90% of that 90% started in the past week (myself included). Going forward I think it will help protect the culture of the site from being rapidly changed by influxes of new users. It's just that right now that culture is in the process of being established to begin with.

I was annoyed when I first discovered the upvoat limits and downvoat restrictions, but the more I thought about it, the more I liked it. I like the concept of putting in your time and paying your dues before you get to voat without restrictions. It will help keep the site reflecting the opinions of actual voaters and not a bunch of people who follow a link from a blog to a controversial post and setup an account in 5 seconds to downvoat it.

If it doesn't work out it can always be changed, but I think it's an idea that deserves at least a few months to see how it plays out.

Not only does it encourage shitposting, but it makes it hard to downvote shitposts. So it is a lose-lose

Especially since it has to be comment contribution points (CCP) instead of submission contribution points (SCP).

Submission points don't count, so that's not even a valid excuse.

Alright, I have heard your idea before and frankly I hate it. It is like a bandaid fix for one user when it is a much bigger issue. We shouldn't have to filter through filth like on Reddit. We should be better than that.

Plus, as a proud /v/all member, not much I can do with blocking not working.

So Voat's content should just cater to your own personal liking then?

[–] GrumpyMidlifeCrisis ago

It might have to be the natural course of things. Perhaps the vast majority need to be able to see and contribute garbage. That stuff needs to be easy to access because the people who contribute shit do so lazily. Maybe we need something sacrificial in order to have quality content. There might be no other natural way around it.

Many Voaters are trying to force their CCP too hard lately. The quality of posts has significantly decreased. 50% Reddit related posts, 40% Hi I'm new, I don't have enough upvoats yet, I need some and 10% actual content. Sad to see this, hopefully we will overcome this transition shitposting soon.

force their CCP

Except submissions don't count towards CCP, so what's the point in shitposting?

Because as OP of a popular post, you will more than likely have some top comments if you don't screw it up.

I rarely post on Reddit, so I've come to Voat and tried to post meaningful posts... well at least thats my aim, I'll probably just continue commenting occasionally. But commenting is contributing to Voats success.

Honestly, I think now that we have more users, it is a little low.

Took me about two weeks when I started to get downvotes. I could probably get that in a day now.

No, this makes no sense. Where are those upvoats going to come from? You have a lot of people needing comment points, and very few people who can give them out. It's frustrating, and makes me have to go leave idiotic comments pandering to popular opinion just so I can participate. What if my opinions are unpopular? Tough shit, I guess. I better learn to please.
