Why don't we get basic functionality of the site up and running before we start worrying about issues like this?

As a Mod in several subverses.

  • Get the messaging system up and running.

  • Get the moderation system up and running. I've had a few very minor things that I would like to fix, but can't

EDIT: I now have the ability to edit or delete any post in any of the subs I'm a moderator in and the PM system is working. Something got fixed/updated. Thank you

I agree, it's putting the cart before the horse - we don't even know if this will happen yet. Currently, downvoting is only enabled with a certain level of IP, so brigading and bot armies are not necessarily guaranteed to be a problem.

No reason not to talk about it though :)

Plus I think it's too open to abuse. People have already thought about malicious targeting; there are surely other cases that haven't been though about yet. Let's wait until this place is popular enough to attract troublemakers and deal with them then.

This place has one person I've seen so far running around in threads calling people shills and just generally being rude, which is partly what spawned this idea.

Hi AJ! Any specific points with moderation system that need urgent attention?

Not AJ, but we can't remove comments, do modmail, and level 2 mods can't do css

EDIT: I just went and checked the subs I'm a moderator in and I seem to have edit / delete privileges now and I sent you (Atko) a test PM.

Well you can't report comments or posts, that's kind of borked.

I do like the sound of this idea :) I am eager to find out what the rest thinks about it.

Edit: to prevent abuse, I guess we could just lockout such accounts in case the owner was a victim of a downvote brigade.

Unless there is some kind of karma court where they can appeal, I think this could easily be abused to get rid of someone just because a majority of people don't like them.

Another question is what happens to the subverses they run? I could imagine a group of people downvoting someone in order to free up their subverse or something if it were to be freed up.

Sorry to revive a 70+ day old thread but...

What about simply disallowing negative CP? If a troll wants to troll, they will, regardless of points. Many people on reddit troll for the purpose of collecting negative numbers and show them off as a badge of honor. What if you just set the lower range of CP to 0 and prevented negative CP?

I love this idea. Simple and elegant solution.

A lockout makes sense, but it would be nice if the accounts were then (usually) deleted, in case someone else wants to use the username in the future.

Yeah I think a lockout would be a good idea, because then you could investigate if need be.

The biggest issue I can see with this would be targeted censorship of certain accounts by group voting.

Judging by the comments, I guess we can safely assume that this is not a good idea :)

I see this as a possible benefit in the future, but at this point I don't think it's something to really worry about. Not to mention the very likely possibilities some have brought up of people abusing that feature to free up subverses or delete users they don't agree with by vote brigading...

Just with the relatively small size of the site at this point, I don't see the benefit, taking into account the effort that it would take to implement it plus the possibility of abuse.

I agree. There are numerous higher priorities than implementing a feature such as this.

Maybe if the negative karma had to come from multiple sources it would reduce the potential for abuse -- If a pattern had to be detected rather than just a single threshold.

Banning people because they hold an unpopular opinion is ridiculous...
