Seriously though, I'm pretty surprised Seattle and Portland didn't even apply.

I don't think so. You have to remember that while Hockey is the 4th largest sport in the US, it's still low on the totem pole compared to the "Big 3." LV is going to be an experimental market which could have a huge payoff and if they give Quebec a team they'll probably follow the Jets model and see some success.

It would surprise me to have only one expansion team as that would make an uneven number of teams in the league.

No, they won't. NHL board and Gary bettman has expressed no interest in the team leaving.

Yotes have been in the Phoenix area for 19 years.

Agreed, it does look pretty bad on the NHL, I was hoping for more competition as well in the bidding process. However I feel that Bettman will reluctantly concede defeat soon enough on that Canadian expansion point. He'll definitely hold off as long as he can, though. Maybe after he gets a team in Hawaii he'll look north of the border ;)

Honestly, a relocation of Arizona, in my mind, is very unlikely. I don't think Bettman would like to admit he was wrong.

Bettman has always been about expanding the game.

Arizona's problem has consistently been bad ownership and a lack of success. The Stars and Lightning are teams in the sunbelt that have had good owners, and a good deal of success. They're in no danger of folding.
