in boy scouts we read topographic maps all the time and discussed routes and such. But never really understood them because we never used them in the field or did actual exercises with them.
It wasn't until my twenties and I was working in oil exploration as a seismic driller that I learned how to use them after getting lost in the mountains. They can be pretty valuable especially when even your compass won't help much.
